Yet another reason not to fly Ryanair

Ryanair, the leading European low-cost airline, is installing equipment to allow use of mobile phones in its planes. Michael O’Leary, CEO, comments to the Financial Times: “If you want a quiet flight, use another airlineā€¦ Ryanair is noisy, full and we are always trying to sell you something.”

Ryanair modelled itself on Southwest Airlines, but where its CEO, Herb Kelleher, is famous for humor and enthusiasm, O’Leary is determined to be a bastard. But his flights are very cheap.

I have never flown with Ryanair, and every thing I hear about it makes me less likely to ever do so.

In this case it is not just the prospect of berks nattering away (“Hallo. I’m on a plane!”) but the attitude of the CEO. In the Guardian he was quoted as saying that the OFCOM objections related to long-haul flights where passengers might want to sleep but that all Ryanair flight are shorter and ‘nobody sleeps because we are too busy selling things to them’

I don’t know about anyone else, but even on a short flight I would rather sleep than have an hour or two of hard sell.

The phone thing is certainly a disincentive. But Ryanair has a range of reprehensible policies. They had a policy of making wheelchair users pay an extra fee until a court ruled against them. They appealed the verdict and lost again.
