Best crossword clue ever?

“Frank had slightly more than Edith (7)”

That clue, in yesterday’s Guardian cryptic crossword, is one of the most delightful I’ve ever encountered. It took me a long time to get it, but when I did a broad smile spread across my face. The next morning, I’m still grinning. True brilliance.

I’ll provide the answer in a comment to this post in case you want to figure it out.

    The answer is “regrets”.

Still can’t figure it out? Frank Sinatra sang, “Regrets, I’ve had a few.” Edith Piaf, in contrast, sang, “Je ne regrette rien.”

If you don’t like that, you should stay far, far away from English cryptic crosswords.

That’s one of those wonderful clues where you know that you’ve hit the right answer long before you know why it’s correct. The choices for who Edith might be are more limited than Frank, but once you’ve thought of Piaf, the answer pops up straight away. A well written crossword clue is a little piece of joy.
