Lance, thanks for the info. I forgot about the issues with the Scouts, but I was really thinking about youth organizations more generally (perhaps "youth movements" is a better term for what I have in mind).

Of course, the tinkering school does more, and has different goals - and may appeal to different kids. Still, it should be recognized that these sorts of activities are not as original, and that in different cultures/countries they (or a subset) may be more widely available than something like the tinkering school, which while very exciting is also very expensive.

Ehud, that's true in the US as well, but tinkering school goes way beyond the comparatively innocent pursuits of the Scouts. There's also an issue in some communities (like Berkeley) with the Boy Scouts intolerant policies. Their rules prohibit membership by atheists, agnostics and "known or avowed" homosexuals. There are many good things about the Scouts, but such barbaric rules would certainly prevent me from enlisting my sons in the Scouts.

This seems to be a largely US problem, according to the Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_Scouts_of_America_membership_controversies

While the tinkering school sounds great, and had I not been over thirty I'd seriously consider attending, since I am not from the USA, I have to wonder if that sort of need isn't better served by things like the Scouts.

In his TED presentation he talks about playing with fire, for example, something you tend to do in the boy scouts on field trips etc. At least in other countries.

Isn't this the situation in the US?
