The human at the train station didn't look at a computer to find the answer. He had a voluminous print-out to check. Doesn't make much sense to me.

On the Calatrava bridge, it wasn't open yet when we were there. It is supposed to open this summer, but schedules in Italy can be a bit hit and miss.

So the telephone information line was overloaded, while the physical information line was, um, overloaded. Both of them were lines to get through to a human sitting in front of a computer who would type in the information you gave them and spit out an answer in return saying whether the train you specified was scheduled to run. I dream of a day when someone comes up with a disintermediating technology which would cut out the middleman here. It would be hard, though, since the customers could be anywhere at all, there would have to be some kind of web of computers stretching world-wide, all of which had access to the same information. Ah, but, a chap can dream.

Incidentally, have they finished that new bridge over the Grand Canal at the train station yet?

I think a more precise translation of the last sentence would be "Write me something yourself"
