Duke of URL

Listening to Talk of the Nation on KQED today, I heard a guest refer to an organization’s “earl”. It took my a moment to figure out what he meant. Oh, URL. I hope that doesn’t catch on.

I’ve heard it pronounced that way (and have said it that way myself) since at least 1997. Your title was the pseudonym of one of the writers at the late, lamented Suck.com. Magdalena Donea, who was once very high profile on the web indeed, consistently uses the alias “urlgirl.”
So it’s not so much a question of “catching on,” as “has already been passed by.” The net equivalent of “23 skiddoo,” if you will.
Not that that’ll stop me.
